NACS Is Gaining Momentum—Are CCS1 EVs Ready?

The EV charging landscape in North America is undergoing a noticeable shift.


In the past, NACS was closely associated with Tesla. Tesla has also been working toward opening its Supercharger network to more electric vehicles.


Today, that change is gradually becoming a reality.


Tesla has now expanded NACS Supercharger access to 21 automotive brands and groups, including Ford, Rivian, GM, Volvo, Polestar, Nissan, Lucid, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Genesis, Kia, Honda, Acura, as well as BMW, Audi, Porsche, JLR, Toyota, Subaru, Volkswagen, and Stellantis.


For owners of these brands, this means one very practical thing:


More fast-charging resources are becoming available.


This is especially important for long-distance travel, where charging network coverage can matter more than the connector itself.


In cities, EV drivers may have several charging networks to choose from. But once a vehicle leaves major urban areas and enters smaller towns, suburbs, or more remote locations, knowing which charging stations are available nearby can directly affect the entire journey.


This is where the addition of the Tesla Supercharger network becomes more than simply “another charging brand.”


It gives eligible CCS1 EV owners the opportunity to access another fast-charging network.


Tesla Superchargers Aren’t All the Same


There is an important detail that is easy to overlook:


Not all Tesla Superchargers are available to non-Tesla EVs in exactly the same way.


Today, Tesla Supercharging scenarios for non-Tesla EVs can generally be divided into three categories.

Tesla is gradually opening NACS Supercharger access to more automakers.


For newer vehicles with a native NACS port, the connection can be direct. For vehicles that still use the CCS1 standard, a compatible NACS DC adapter may be required, depending on the vehicle and charging network requirements.


Exactly which vehicles and charging stations are supported still needs to be confirmed based on the requirements of the vehicle manufacturer and Tesla.


This is also why NACS should not simply be understood as “CCS1 being replaced.”


The reality is more interesting:


The two charging systems are likely to coexist for a long time.


For CCS1 EV Owners, This Can Actually Be a Good Thing


Imagine you are driving a CCS1 electric vehicle on a long-distance road trip.


In the past, your route planning would mainly focus on one question:


Where can I find a CCS1 fast charger?


Now, if your vehicle has gained access to eligible Superchargers, your options become:


Where can I find a CCS1 fast charger?


And:


Where can I find a compatible Tesla Supercharger?


These two networks do not necessarily have to compete with each other.


Instead, they can complement one another.


Where one charging network has limited coverage, another may provide an additional option.


For EV drivers who frequently travel long distances, having access to another reliable charging network means greater flexibility when planning a route.


That is one of the real advantages of opening the NACS ecosystem.


It does not necessarily require owners to change their vehicles.


Instead, it gives existing CCS1 EVs the opportunity to access more charging infrastructure.


So, How Can a CCS1 EV Connect to a NACS Charger?


The first question is a very basic one:


Do the connectors match?


If the charging equipment uses NACS while the vehicle uses CCS1, the two cannot connect directly.


This is where a NACS to CCS1 Adapter becomes the bridge between the two connector standards.

The newer generation of V4 Superchargers uses longer charging cables, one of the goals being to make it easier for different EV models to connect to the charging equipment.

Differences in vehicle models, charging port locations, and charging equipment will continue to exist.
